Today we can enjoy not only paper books, but also watch incredible films and TV series based on the works. Everyone can immerse themselves in fantastic worlds in any convenient way. We suggest to dwell more on the topic of cinematography, because many film adaptations of books in the science fiction genre are real masterpieces! It was very difficult for us to choose the top 5 best films, but we did it especially for you.

Let’s start with the classics. A black and white film directed by Robert Wise based on Harry Bates’ book “Farewell to the Overlord”. Release date 1951. We want to highlight this particular film, because in 2008, a remake of the same name was released with Keanu Reeves in the title role. The film describes the active period of the Cold War and the first contact of mankind with aliens who landed in Washington. The story does not repeat exactly the plot of Bates’ short story, but still worthy of attention of all admirers of the genre. The picture was one of the first to touch on ufological issues and gained popularity. Reviews often talk about an unexpected ending, which can be checked by personally watching the film.
Films based on fantastic books are not always filled with large-scale space battles and terrible pictures of the future of mankind. A striking example of humorous fiction was the screen embodiment of the book by Douglas Adams “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. At the box office, the film received a more concise title, which knows all self-respecting connoisseurs of the genre – “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (2005). The film was directed by Garth Jennings. The original plot, ironic characters and their unforgettable adventures make the film worthy of our list. The message of the creators of the work is quite simple – often the important turns out to be unimportant and vice versa, you need to live, enjoying every moment.

Fiction based on books often appears on the basis of incredible stories. In 2011, programmer Andy Ware had no idea that his passion for writing in a few years could be embodied in a world-famous film, which will shoot the legendary Ridley Scott. The main character Mark Watney failed to evacuate from Mars with the rest of the crew. He remains on the red planet in a surviving habitation module and tries to survive. No matter how difficult it was to show the theme of loneliness and the desire to survive, Matt Damon, who played the main character, it definitely succeeded. Many people find the film hard to perceive, since it is oversaturated with calculations and other scientific information.
Author Jeff Vandermeer wrote a science fiction trilogy “Southern Limit” about an anomalous place that appeared on Earth. “Annihilation” was the first part that was successfully screened in 2018, involving not only modern special effects, but also famous actors and actresses. Alex Garland managed to complement the story with a unique visual series and show the psyche of the characters. In general, the emphasis in the story is not on alien battles and action, but on the experiences of the characters and their disclosure. “Annihilation” is that rare case when the film many viewers find more interesting, full and rich than the book.

It is impossible to write about the best screen adaptations of science fiction without mentioning this world masterpiece. “Dune”, written by Frank Herbert in 1965, has already received two remakes (1984 and 2021). We will focus on the last film, which made a real furore in the world of cinema. Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful interpretation of the novel sparked a new wave of interest in science fiction, as well as a favourable reaction from critics. 6 Academy Awards are proof of that. Despite the complexity of filming such pictures, the director managed to carefully and accurately recreate the atmosphere of a desert planet. Impressive cast, camerawork, script honed to the last detail, music – the film “Dune” fully justified the expectations of fans of the book.
