Home Office Organization Ideas

A workplace at home is a necessary space in almost every flat. But, unfortunately, not everyone has a separate office. Therefore, the question arises, where to find and how to equip a workspace in a residential flat so that it:

  1. was comfortable;
  2. contains everything you need;
  3. organically fit into the general interior of the flat.

To answer the question: how to organise a workplace at home, you need to know a few rules for creating a comfortable space.

Rules of organisation

№1. First you need to decide how much space you need and what will go into this area. If you sit at the computer, then a small computer table will suit you. If you deal with papers or books, then you need to think in advance where you will put these accessories so that they will always be at hand.

№2. Look at your flat and think whether there is a space suitable for a working area. If there is, then you will only have to pick up the necessary design of the workplace in the flat. If there is no such zone, try to rearrange it.

№3. Be sure to consider how the light will come to your desk: from the window, from lighting fixtures, etc. Consider whether you can install and connect a lamp so that you don’t suffer from a lack of light afterwards.

№4. If you decide to organise a workplace at home, its design should not go against the general interior of your flat or room.

Separate room

The best option is a separate room. Then you can decorate the room as it will be convenient for you. Install the necessary number of shelves, use a table of the size you need, design an additional zone for rest, putting a small sofa or a soft chair.

In the living room

In the modern world, not everyone has the opportunity to organise their workspace in a separate room. As a rule, for these purposes it is necessary to do in one of the living rooms, for example, in the living room. In order for the working area to be organically inscribed in the total area of the living room, you need to think about the design of the desk, racks and shelves that you will need. You can separate the space by using partitions or large floor shelves, which will become both a partition and a place to store the necessary things.

In the bedroom

If the living room can be disturbed by your housemates, the bedroom is a more secluded place. Here it is necessary to separate the area for sleeping. For this purpose, it is enough to hang a curtain between the bed and the table, put a partition or install a canopy.

In the kitchen

Organising your corner in the kitchen, you need to remember that the neighbourhood with the cooker or sink will become dangerous for equipment or documents. Therefore, you can zone the kitchen room with floor shelving or use a double table: on one side – a desk, on the other – a kitchen table.

On the balcony

As a rule, every flat has balconies, but they are often used as a place to store unnecessary things. You can apply the balcony in a more useful form and make it your office. But before that, you need to insulate and glaze it, so that you can use it not only in summer, but also in winter.

A warm floor and quality windows will make the balcony a comfortable place to work. The size of the table and shelves should be chosen based on the size of the balcony, try to use all the free space in order to place the necessary things there. A huge plus of this room is that there is a lot of light and fresh air, and it is much more pleasant to work in such an environment.

In the pantry

Organising a workspace in the pantry is easier than on the balcony, because you do not need to insulate and conduct additional heating devices, but you need to be more creative. Pantries are usually smaller than balconies, but they usually have doors that allow you to separate this area from the rest of the living space.

You can install a small table in the pantry itself, and leave the rest of the space for shelves and additional storage organisers. For finishing in the pantry, choose light colours and think about the light system. Unlike the balcony, here you will not be able to use natural light, so install several lighting devices.

Placement options

We offer you some original ideas for a desk, which will help to competently organise the zone, while not taking up a lot of space.

In a niche

In many flats there are wall niches, they are usually allocated for decorative elements, but you can use and more practical: put a small desk there and install a few shelves.

In a cupboard

Placing a desk in the wardrobe – this is a good option for those who do not have a pantry. You can not only save space in the flat by placing a desk in the wardrobe, but also hide your work area when you need it: just by closing the wardrobe doors. This idea of placement is quite successful also because there will be enough space in the cupboard to put away the necessary accessories.

Folding table

If you have a small flat, and you need to save space, then you can not buy a massive desk, but use a small folding table. They are usually installed against the walls and “recline” when needed.

Window sill

The space by the window usually has no function, and you can organise a work area there. A workstation by the window is an extension of the window sill, an enlargement of it. In this case, you will not lose square metres, but you will gain excellent lighting and a comfortable place to work. Flowers that will organically fit into this space will help to brighten it up. A workplace by the window can also give you a beautiful view.

For two people

If there are several people in the flat who need a workspace, you can organise a workplace for two. For this purpose, as a rule, long desks on one of the walls of the room are used. If you do not have such an opportunity, then you can resort to a more economical option, a desk for two, divided by a shelf. In this way, you will organise yourself a table and storage space.

Interesting ideas

Organising your workspace at home is not as difficult as it may seem.

№1. In order to use the room more economically, fix shelves and small organisers on the walls to “unload” the work surface.

№2. The printer can be installed not only on the table, but also on a fixed shelf, thus leaving it at hand, but freeing up space for work at home.

№3. Use slate boards to jot down important ideas.

№4. Add flowers to your work area to help refresh and revitalise the design of your space.
